Google has announced a $1 billion investment in Thailand to establish a data center and extend its cloud infrastructure, demonstrating its commitment to Southeast Asia’s fast-rising technology sector. This breakthrough will help to meet the increased demand for cloud services and drive AI adoption throughout the area.
The investment will focus on constructing a data center in Chonburi and a cloud region in Bangkok. These projects are expected to create 14,000 jobs annually between 2025 and 2029 and boost Thailand’s GDP by $4 billion in 2029. The data center will enable local businesses and public organizations to access advanced cloud services, including AI innovations.
Supporting Thailand’s Digital Economy
This initiative aligns with Thailand’s “Cloud First” policy, which encourages the adoption of cloud technologies to strengthen the country’s digital economy. Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra appreciated Google’s efforts, emphasizing that the project will empower Thai businesses and citizens by providing access to crucial cloud and AI technologies.
Additionally, Google has committed to expanding its digital talent programs in Thailand. These include training 150,000 more Thais in AI and digital literacy by 2026, building on previous efforts such as the Samart Skills and Google Gemini Academy programs, which have already trained millions.
Driving AI and Cloud Growth in Southeast Asia
Google’s investment in Thailand is part of a broader strategy to expand its AI and cloud footprint in Southeast Asia, where demand for these technologies is proliferating. In recent months, other tech giants, such as Microsoft, have also announced similar investments in the region, underscoring Southeast Asia’s importance as a hub for digital transformation.
By building infrastructure in Thailand, Google aims to provide robust cloud solutions that will power innovations in AI, machine learning, and data analytics for businesses across the region.
